About Celtic Knots
The stylised knot patterns which were used as decoration by the ancient Celtic people were clearly symbolic. Used to decorate monuments, religious structures and manuscripts, the interwoven patterns first appeared around AD450 before the Celts were influenced by organised religion. The precise meanings of many of the symbols have been lost over time. However, some patterns are understood.
Closed knots represent eternity and the Trinity knot, perhaps the best known today, represents the Holy Trinity. The spiral knot is symbolic of eternal life and features three sides which represent earth, fire and water. The one continuous line stands for unity of spirit and in Scotland reflects fidelity in love.
Interlaced Celtic love knots honour the love between two people and jewellery showcasing this design can be exchanged by couples on significant occasions. The Celtic oval knot represents eternal life and could have its origins in patterns dating as far back as 2,500 BC.
